(This is the personal story behind The Blue Button.)
It’s funny that language models choose the blue button over the red when making the initial decision, but then choose red after reasoning it through.
This is the opposite of my choice.
My initial reasoning was simple – i apply superrationality. i think for all minds like me. We press red -> minds like me survive.
Then a friend pointed out that there are mistakes. there are children. there are minds not like mine. and pressing blue is a wager: minds + minds like mine on the line; we lose we cede the world to the red-pressers. we win we live in a blue-button world. (This was sometime in 2023 — the discourse started with a Reddit poll in April 2023, and went viral again on Twitter in April 2026.)
I nodded along at the time but i eventually read the 3bp and watched the supercoordination cluster video.
and i think by now i am a solid blue-buttoner.
